What is a CMS?

A Content Management System or CMS is a tool that stores the content of a web site and then publishes it onto the web.

This is allows a website to be more up to date and flexible, as content can be changed at any time. Some CMSes are even easy enough for non-technical staff to use.

steer cms

Steer CMS is one of the easiest to use, yet most powerful Content Management Systems available. It has all the simplicity and ease of use that any user could hope for while, under the bonnet, it is a sophisticated, flexible powerhouse.

Fast turnaround time

Site updates take seconds - and can be done from anywhere with an internet connection. Edits can be stacked up and all be published at a specific moment. And pages can be hidden away anytime.

And all the site navigation changes automatically and instantaneously as pages are added and removed.

Simple workflow model

Steer CMS separates the look and layout of the site from the content by using templates and style sheets organised into templates. Simply choose a template for a page and all the styling is applied automatically. This gives your site consistency and flow, while still making the site beautiful and flexible.

And if you decide to change a template, then all the pages that use that template are updated automatically. So refreshing the look of the site is simple, easy and quick.

And your web authors don't need to know anything about design.

Reduced costs

Steer CMS server is based on standard technologies which can be deployed on low cost servers. It will work the same on Windows, Linux, Macintosh - any modern operating system. And when you buy a license, we give you the source code, so if you (or someone else) wants to make a change the the underlying engine, you can.

And the interface is all web based - so any computer with an internet conection is a potential authoring workstation.

Increased security

Fully managed access control allows full or limited access to all parts of a site. Integrated login mechanisms and group policies let you set up anything from simple private areas on the site to full role based security to differentiate between authors, editors and publishers.

And of course Steer CMS supports both HTTP and HTTPS requests.

Increased site flexibility

Steer CMS is built on the philosophy of fitness for purpose. We built all sorts of components to do each small part of building a web site. Each component is an idiot savant, doing one thing exceptionally well - but nothing else.

Steer CMS' workflow manager links each of these components together in different workflows depending on the task.

So it is kind of like having a production line entirely filled with RainMen.

If you need to add or change a component it is simple and cheap and can be done without stopping the server. And if you have a new task - it is just as simple.

Lets imagine that you decide that you want to double publish the site - once to normal browsers and again to mobile telephone browsers. Simple. Just add a 'copy' task before the 'apply template' task and pass the copy through the WAP publishing workflow.

Excellent search engine accessability

Steer CMS pages are well formed and comply with the relevent web standards. This means that they are guaranteed both to render properly in all major browsers and also to be easily searched by all the major search engines.

And best of all, this is done without cheating - so that by using Steer CMS you don't enter into the arms race between the search engine optimising companies and the search engine companies.

And if you need to have your site accessible to voice browsers, or be compliant with the Americans with Disabialities Act, then a simple flick of a software switch and your site is WCAG compliant.
